How: The USBTC competition is held in multiple stages.
This allows beers to be judged in
relatively small flights while ensuring that the best beers are determined through
head-to-head competition. All beers were tasted in blinded fashion and judged
on a
hedonic scale (scale ranges from “like extremely” to “dislike
extremely”).
A total of 421 beers from 169 breweries were examined across 12 beer categories.
Within each category, the USBTC determined both an overall grand champion and
six
regional champions.
A total of 405 beers from 141 breweries were examined
across 13 beer categories. Within each category, the USBTC determined
both an overall grand champion and six regional champions.

*Note: Helles is a German word meaning “light in color.” A
Helles is a German beer that is medium in body and low in bitterness. A Dortmunder
is
a beer that is brewed in Dortmund, Germany. Dortmund is known for their export
style beers, which usually means they are hoppier and stronger.
